Up in the hills and set in a tranquil, wooded area less than 10 minutes drive from the ancient village of Casares, we bought our villa intending to live in it as our main home, but presently we enjoy visiting from our home in London. We have therefore made it a place in which we can very much feel "at home".

With overall floor space of approximately 110 sq m (1,200 sq ft) the hallway, sitting/reception room, dining room (with access to outside raised deck of 17 sq m) and kitchen areas are all on one level, with a half flight of stairs up to the master bedroom and a half flight of stairs down to the guest bedrooms and second bathroom. Two of the bedrooms are double bedrooms (one with en-suite bathroom) and one is a single bedroom. From the hallway you enter the main sitting/reception room and then on into the dining room or kitchen. We have satellite tv, broadband internet with wifi, music system, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave oven,etc. There is also gas central heating and a wood-burning stove.

Entry to our property is through electrically operated gates and there is spacious and easy access, level parking. There is also a small side gate for when you go out for walks.

For relaxation we have shaded and unshaded areas around the pool or on adjacent patios at other levels. One of the patios is under a shaded pergola where there is a table and chairs for outside dining.

Our 6,700 sq m of hillside land has its own 8 x 4m swimming pool and we have many varieties of trees and plants - oaks, cork oaks, pines, jacarandas, firs, olives, mimosas, palms, yuccas, oleanders, agaves, aloes and more. Bird-life is abundant in the area and birds of prey (vultures and eagles) are often seen soaring overhead.

Please note that we do not recommend the villa for families with small or younger children (under around 10 or 11 years). There is a full flight of stairs down to the open pool area, there are also quite a few agave plants with very sharp pointed leaves around the garden and, to the side of the house, some areas of land slope away quite steeply.

Our home is located in a valley, just north-east of Casares village. The valley's residents and a small boutique hotel are served by a quiet valley road that joins the main Casares road some 10km from a roundabout where it meets the A7/N340 coastal highway. It takes 15 minutes to drive from our home to this coastal highway which is also the location of the closest beach for swimming and beach-side restaurant ("chiringuito"). It takes a little longer to reach the nearby town of Sabinillas and the Duquesa port/marina which are just down the coast road going west.

As you drive down the Casares road (within 10 minutes of our home) there are several fine, reasonably priced restaurants and ventas with menus offering Spanish and international dishes. Along the coast there is a wide selection of bars, resturants, coffee bars as well as a selection of well stocked supermarkets. Good beaches for swimming and beach-side restaurants are plentiful all along the coast.

Golf. As is well known, the Costa Del Sol is renowned for its excellent golf courses. There is a wide variety of choice in golf courses which can be reached easily from Casares. The closest is Finca Cortesin which, for the last couple of years, has hosted a Volvo Masters international golf tournament attracting some of the world's top golfers.

Walking. There are many local walks you can take through the surrounding hills and woodland. We have a book available that contains details of recommended walks.

Horse riding. Horse rides are offered by local stables.

Places of interest. There are so many places of interest to visit in Andalucia and lots that can be easily reached for a day's visit. Some examples of the best known destinations and drive times are as follows: -
Marbella - 40min; Malaga - 1hr 15min; Gibraltar 45min; Tarifa 1hr 10min.
From Tarifa, it is easy to easy to visit Tangier, Morocco for a day using the fast ferry service.

Other destinations: Ronda - 1hr 15min; Jerez de la Frontera -1hr 45min; Seville - 2hr 30min; Granada (The Alhambra) 3 hr.

Close to home (and walkable), it is well worth spending time to explore Casares. It has great views, ambiance and an interesting history.

Being a second home, exchanges do not have to be simultaneous. We do not expect to travel for a home exchange visit until April/May 2013.

My wife and I spend most of our time living in London but visit our home in Spain as often as we can. I am English and retired and my wife comes from Argentina and still works (self-employed). Because of my previous work for an international telecommunications company we lived in various countries around the world before returning to our UK base. We have four children, all now adults.

I enjoy sport, occasionally playing tennis, DIY work, riding my motorcycle and, together with my wife, we like improving our garden. My wife enjoys cooking (and is very good at it!) and I like cooking on the barbecue - although I am not as accomplished as my Argentine in-laws! We both enjoy going to the theatre and cinema - but don't go as much as we would like.
